PhD Student (f/m/d) Laser-driven ion acceleration with cryogenic jet targets

The Institute of Radiation Physics conducts research for states of matter under extreme conditions and in very small dimensions.

The Department of Laser Particle Acceleration is looking for a PhD Student (f/m/d) Laser-driven ion acceleration with cryogenic jet targets. 

In the 1st year it is a 50% position. Increase to 75% in the 2nd year.

Your tasks

  • Your work will focus on the development of laser driven ion accelerators together with an international team
  • You will mainly be concerned with experiments at the high power laser facility Draco at HZDR to study, control and optimize acceleration processes
  • For that you will apply the novel laser target concept of cryogenic sources of hydrogen or other noble gases for high-repetition rate experiments
  • Complementary, plasma and particle diagnostics need to be used and developed

Your profile

  • Completed university studies (Master/Diploma) in the field of Physics or related field
  • You are Interested to work on experiments in a laboratory, perfect would be experience in working with optical setups and high power lasers
  • Ideally, you have background in the fields of accelerator, plasma, or laser physics
  • You have an interest in the world of materials at ultra-low temperatures
  • You enjoy autonomous scientific work as well as project activities
  • You have excellent communication skills for the work in larger international teams
  • You have a very good command of English and are able to present results convincingly, both orally and in writing
