Preparation: A series of mixed solutions of 0.5 M Fe(NO3)3·9H2O with variable Al(NO3)3·9H2O were prepared with the Al/(Al + Fe) molar ratios in solution adjusted to 0, 10 and 15 mol% Al. A 2.5 M NaOH solution was added to 100 mL of the mentioned solutions at a rate of 10 mL min−1 until the final pH was 13.00 ± 0.05. The suspensions were stirred for 30 min and then aged for 14 days at 70 °C. After aging, the suspended solids were washed with boiled Milli-Q water until the conductivity was less than 2 μS cm−1 . After that, the samples were freeze-dried and stored in polypropylene containers in a closed desiccator.
Crystallinity: more plate-like particles and crystals with irregular edges in addition to acicular ones
Dimension: length: 120 nm, width: 39 nm
Purity: no evidence for other iron(hydr)oxides
Composition: the molar Al/Fe + Al ratio of the coprecipitate was 8.67%
