Preparation:	Manganese dioxide was obtained by oxidizing MnCl2 by slow addition of KMnO4 [BM82a]. To remove Mn2+, birnessite was treated with 0.1 М HCl and then washed with 0.1 M HCl until reaching an unchanging pH value (the rate of emf change was lower than 0.6 mV/h).
