Details Sample Characterization

Mineral: Hematite
Reference: SBHKB97
Preparation: obtained by forced hydrolysis of an acidic iron( III) solution (31, 32) . To 975 mL of preheated 3.75E-3 M HCl, which was prepared by diluting concentrated HCl (37%, Merck, p.a.) with deionized water from a Nanopure apparatus (Barnstead) , 25 mL of 0.4 µm filtered 0.72 M FeCl3 (Fluka, p.a.) solution were added under continuous stirring while keeping the temperature above 96 °C. The solution was transferred into a 1 L polypropylene container sealed and placed for 24 h into an oven preheated to 100 °C. After being cooled to room temperature, the solid phase was washed by subsequent centrifugation (9000 rpm, ~9000g, 30 min) and redispersion steps with 1E-3 M HClO4 and with deionized water until the conductivity of the supernatants reached those of the pure washing solutions. More than twenty such batches were excombined to a single stock suspension, which was adjusted to pH 4 with HClO4 and aged in an autoclave for 8 h at 130 °C. The yield of the entire procedure was about 70%. The final stock suspension with a hematite concentration 11.7 ± 0.2 g/L was stored in a polyethylene bottle in the dark at 47C and pH 4–5 adjusted with HClO4.
