Preparation: synthesized following a procedure similar to that described by Atkinson et al. [18]; 800 ml of a 5M NaOH solution were slowly added (dropwise) to 4 L of a 0.1 M Fe(NO3)3 · 9H2O solution under continuous stirring and N2 bubbling; obtained dispersion was then aged for 72 h at 60 °C, cooled at room temperature, and dialyzed until the conductivity was lower than 10 μS/cm; freeze-dried in order to obtain a dry powder

Dimension: particle length: 400 - 1000 nm, particle width: 30 - 65 nm
