Preparation: prepared using the method of [SC00]. Precipitation was initiated by rapidly adding a 5 M KOH solution to a 1.0 M solution of Fe(NO3)3. The precipitation reaction was quenched by the addition of a copious volume of Type 1 water, and the suspension was placed in a 70°C oven for 60 h. The precipitate was then centrifuge washed with 1 M HCl until pH 5 was obtained, then with 1 mM KNO3 until all traces of chloride ion were removed, as determined by a silver nitrate test. The goethite was stored in a 1 mM KNO3 suspension at ambient temperature.
