Preparation:	Sample was dispersed in water and the <2 µm fraction was collected by sedimentation techniques. The clay was placed in dialysis tubing and soaked for 5 h in 0.5 M NaNO₃ at a pH of 3 to remove dissolved impurities and to saturate the clay with Na⁺ ions. Excess salt was removed by washing ten times with ultrapure water and the clay was then freeze-dried
