Preparation:	details of the conditioning procedure are available in [BB09a]; Additional washing was performed to extract the intrinsic uranium in illite. Briefly, 5.0 g of conditioned Na-illite was added into a 50 mL polypropylene centrifuge tube containing 30 mL of carbonate solution ([DIC] = 250 mM, pH = 10). The suspension was shaken for 24 h, then centrifuged, and the supernatant was decanted. This procedure was repeated three times, followed by washing with deionized water three times and drying in air.
