Gibbsite [Al(OH)4] was prepared in the laboratory by precipitation following methods outlined by Anderson and Benjamin (1990b) and McBride and Wesselink (1988). A solution of aluminum nitrate and nitric acid was brought to pH 8.0 by the
addition of concentrated sodium hydroxide. The addition of sodium hydroxide causes the formation of Al(OH)3 by precipitation. The solid phase which precipitates was then placed in dialysis tubing, and the tubes were submerged in distilled-deionized (DDI) water and washed to remove sodium nitrate. Following dialysis, the gibbsite suspension was lyophollzed for storage. |
