Wie können wir Informationen effizienter verarbeiten und Speicher- und Computertechnologien mit neuen nützlichen Funktionen entwickeln? Wie können wir Energie besser und sicherer gewinnen und speichern? Der Einsatz neuartiger Materialien kann dazu beitragen, diese Schlüsselfragen der heutigen Gesellschaft zu beantworten. Um die mechanischen, thermischen, elektrischen, optischen oder magnetischen Eigenschaften von Materialien für die Anwendung optimieren zu können, muss die Wissenschaft deren physikalischen Aufbau und ihre Wirkprinzipien genau kennen.
Mithilfe unserer Großgeräte untersuchen HZDR-Wissenschaftlerinnen und -Wissenschaftler den mikroskopischen Aufbau und die Funktionsweise von Materialien sowie ihr Verhalten auch auf kürzesten Zeitskalen von billionstel Sekundenbruchteilen. Zum Einsatz kommen dabei vor allem das Hochfeld-Magnetlabor Dresden, das Ionenstrahlzentrum und der Freie-Elektronen-Laser an ELBE – dem Zentrum für Hochleistungs-Strahlungsquellen. Die Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler im Institut für Ionenstrahlphysik und Materialforschung forschen an Materialien für die Informationstechnologie, Nanoelektronik oder Photonik. Einerseits sind dies bekannte Materialien wie Silizium, andererseits benötigt der Fortschritt auch völlig neue Materialien und Konzepte, basierend auf III-IV-Halbleitern, Oxiden oder magnetischen Metallen und daraus hergestellten Nanostrukturen.
Die Forscher im Hochfeld-Magnetlabor (HLD) befassen sich mit innovativen magnetischen Materialien. Diese kommen in einer Vielzahl von Anwendungen zum Einsatz: in Windkraftanlagen und Elektrofahrzeugen, in magnetischen Festplatten und bei der Tumorbekämpfung mit magnetischen Nanopartikeln. Sie sind sehr komplex und haben stark wechselwirkende Elektronen – ein fundamentales Verständnis ist nur mithilfe von Experimenten in sehr hohen Magnetfeldern möglich. Als Gründungsmitglied des European Magnetic Field Laboratory (EMFL), das die drei größten und modernsten Magnetfeld-Labore Europas verbindet, fördert das HLD den internationalen wissenschaftlichen Austausch.
Am HZDR werden vor allem die Themengebiete „Magnetismus“, „Materialien und Prozesse für Energie- und Transporttechnologien“, "Nanowissenschaften und Materialien für die Informationstechnologien" und "extreme Materiezustände" bearbeitet.
