Meet a Science Manager

With our new format "Meet a Science Manager" we want to give you the opportunity to visit and get to know local institutions in the field of science management. Get in touch with former postdocs and PhD students and find out how they made the transition from science to science management and what a science manager does.

The goal of this format is to provide insights into different institutions in the field of science management, to establish contacts in this working environment and, thus, to build professional networks. As the field of science management is very broad, we explore as many different areas as possible to show the diversity of this career field.

Our meetings will be in Dresden and the surrounding area. We will learn about the institution itself, its (working) culture, (department-specific) working methods and, of course, about the transfer from academia to science management by former postdocs.

Organizational matters:

• Our "meetings" are scheduled for about 3 hours in the morning (usually 9am to 12pm).
• There are usually about 15 spots available per "meeting". There is a waiting list.
• Our meetings are held in English or German. Please check the announcements for the language used.
• Please register for the meeting you would like to attend. Your registration will be confirmed manually and you will receive more detailed information, e.g. meeting point, shortly before the event.
• If you are unable to attend at short notice due to illness or other reasons beyond your control, please send an email to postdoccenter@hzdr.de as soon as possible. This will give interested people on the waiting list the opportunity to move up.
• Please plan your arrival and departure independently. Please note that you may need to apply for a business trip. Travel expenses to and from the event will not be reimbursed.

June 13th, 2024 @ Saxon State Ministry for Energy, Climate Protection, Environment and Agriculture (abbreviation: SMEKUL)

We visited the division of Radiation Protection, Genetic Engineering and Chemicals, which supervises licensees, works on legislation and advises policy makers. Dr. Britta Schilling (Genetic Engineering and Chemical Safety) and Dr. Michael Anders (Nuclear Technology and Radiation Protection, HZDR-alumni) reported on their daily work and showed how the transfer from science to science management has taken place. Anke Hanert from the Human Resources Department (Personnel Recruitment and Development) informed about the requirements for a promising application, the selection process and career opportunities at SMEKUL.
