Protein biochemistry

Before experiments of high complexity can be performed with biomolecules, purity must first be checked and a basic characterization carried out. For the purification process, we use a wide range of different columns for various automatic chromatographic techniques. For example, we perform size exclusion and affinity chromatography both in the low-pressure range (FPLC) and in the high-pressure range (HPLC). To monitor the purity of biomolecules, we use standard biochemical methods such as gel electrophoresis, isoelectric focusing and western blotting on the one hand, and mass spectrometry on the other. With the help of dynamic light scattering (DLS), we analyze biomolecule solutions with regard to aggregates formed. Of course, all spectroscopic techniques available at the institute can then be applied.
