Microorganisms and salt
Description
A natural process in salt rock: Dresden-based radiochemists were able to show that special microorganisms - so-called haloarchaeans (pink) - convert radioactive heavy metals into insoluble uranyl phosphorus minerals (green) and thus prevent the spread of the substances. This finding is important for a possible final disposal of radioactive waste in the host rock salt.
