X-ray- and micro-focus X-ray-computed tomography
X-ray tomography enables non-invasive and superposition-free measurement of the internal structure of objects. Beside slice-wise two-dimensional measurement and reconstruction it is also possible to reveal the three-dimensional morphology of an object within a single measurement cycle by employing cone-beam tomography utilizing a two-dimensional X-ray image detector. In the framework of research on fluid dynamics X-ray radioscopic and tomographic techniques are used for measurement of local gas and liquid hold-up in flow channels and of species distribution in chemical reaction devices.
The Institute of Fluid Dynamics qualifies and utilizes different X-ray devices for various experimental application areas. These comprise a conventional X-ray system, a micro-focus X-ray assembly and ultrafast X-ray CT setups. These systems are being used for radiography, radioscopy and cone-beam tomography of small and medium sized flow devices, thereby achieving a spatial resolution of 1.0 mm down to 5 µm.
Highest spatial resolution is achievable by employing a micro-focus X-ray system. Such a system is used for measurement in small geometries and in micro-fluidic applications (crystallization processes; two-phase flows in capillaries, small channels and structured packings; micro-structure tomography).
For two-dimensional and three-dimensional reconstruction of the extensive measurement data a set of in-house implementations of GPU-accelerated fast software algorithms is available.
