Inventions in medical technology open up completely new treatment options. For example, smart clothing can support muscle movements and artificial intelligence can facilitate the diagnosis of cancer. However, the complexity of the human body is not the only reason why such technologies meet limitations – ethical issues and social acceptance must also be taken into account before they can be used. The public panel discussion “Limitations of Technology in Medicine” on Tuesday, October 29, 2024 will focus on this area of tension. The debate featuring Prof. Larysa Baraban from Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) will start at 6 pm at the COSMO Science Forum Dresden.

In addition to Larysa Baraban, who heads the Department of Nanomicrosystems at the HZDR and develops, among other things, biosensors for the rapid and cost-effective detection of pathogens, Katharina Langton and Lilli Meseck will also be taking part in the discussion. Langton is leading the Midwifery Bachelor of Science program at TU Dresden as Academic Director. Meseck is a midwifery student in her fourth year. Together with the audience, they will reflect on the opportunities and restrictions of scientific research and the role of human skills that technology cannot replace. After the discussion, there will be an opportunity to network and continue the exchange.

The discussion will be held in English. Admission is free. Registration is not required.

Dr. Zukunft – Medical technology from Dresden science

The panel discussion is part of the supporting program for the exhibition „Dr. Zukunft – Medical technology from Dresden science“, which has been on display at the COSMO Science Forum since October 1. In it, scientists from Dresden research institutions present their current projects. Interactive exhibits provide insights into current developments in medical technology – from artificial intelligence and medical implants to new medical tests. Visitors to the free exhibition discover the contribution that Dresden science is making to the development of innovative and highly specialized medical devices.

“Dr. Zukunft” is aimed at anyone interested in science aged 12 and over. The exhibition can be visited until February 28, 2025 from Tuesday to Thursday, between 1 and 6 pm.
